It is for the first time that the art gallery in Cholamandal Village, Laburnum & Indigo Galleries, is organizing a major photography exhibition, according to the artist fraternity there, who well appreciated the show.

According to Kotaro Iizawa, the eminent photo historian and critic who curated the exhibition, it “illuminates Tohoku from a variety of viewpoints”. Perhaps Tohoku could be treated as a universal concept rather than just the name of one geographical area in Japan, according to him. Tohoku region was devastated in the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, but it resurrected very fast.

This exhibition, curated as part of the first anniversary of the disaster, reflects the life, cultural heritage and tradition of the place through the lens eyes of different photographers from different generations.

“The media coverage of the destruction made many people familiar with the names of Tohoku cities and prefectures, but few are likely to have a broad knowledge of the other aspects of the region – its climate, natural and cultural environment, history, way of life, or people,” said the curator, adding that it is expected that this relatively unknown region will be rendered more familiar by the brilliant artistic expression of these marvelous Japanese photographers.

Exactly, that is what is attracting people of Chennai to this exhibition. Here are some glimpses from the path-breaking exhibition, which is on in Cholamandal Village till August 11, 2022.
