International Museum Day 2024: Celebrating ‘Museums for Education and Research’

Those magical places are called museums, and today, on May 18, we celebrate International Museum Day (IMD) to honour these incredible institutions. Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, IMD is an annual celebration highlighting the cultural and educational importance of museums worldwide.
This year’s IMD theme, ‘Museums for Education and Research,’ underscores the dynamic role museums play as educational centers. They are more than mere repositories of artifacts; they are spaces where curiosity is nurtured, creativity is sparked, and critical thinking is developed. Museums provide a unique platform for both formal and informal learning, fostering a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Featuring the iconic museum ‘M’ in vibrant colours against a black backdrop, the poster symbolizes the diverse spectrum of knowledge offered by museums. It encapsulates the vast repository of information awaiting exploration and sharing.
International Museum Day 2024 also aligns with two significant Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations:
Quality Education – Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.
By focusing on quality education and promoting innovation and infrastructure, museums actively participate in shaping the future, not just preserving the past.
Museums worldwide will host various events, from special exhibitions and educational workshops to interactive tours and lectures, engaging visitors of all ages. These activities aim to make learning fun and accessible, encouraging people to rethink education and envision a future where knowledge sharing transcends boundaries.

The Creative Corner at Velammal Knowledge Park showcases the creativity of the students and the history of a great educational institution A wall that relives the creative oeuvre of Raja Ravi Varma. ‘Woman in Red’, ‘Radha in the Moonlight’, ‘Lady with Fruit Platter’… and even the artist himself in his royal costume.
